Sidesman Duties

 

The role of sidesman, you may think, is simply a case of a cheery “hello” and handing out hymn books.  But there’s more to it than that.  The sidesman is officially an assistant to the churchwarden, with a list of duties as detailed below.  Should you feel that this is a role you can help with, perhaps once a month, then please see either of the churchwardens before the APCM. 

 

  1. Be present at least 30 minutes before the start of the service.

 

  1. Get out books and insert notices. Fetch collection bags from the vestry.

 

  1. Put out altar candles if not already out. Check that the candles are lit 15mins before the service begins (although the servers usually do this at the 10.00 a.m. service). Make sure that all the microphones are in place and working.

 

  1. Make sure the South door is unlocked for the 10.00 a.m. service and that it is locked after the service. The key is in the Vestry.

 

  1. At the 10.00 a.m. service, check with the Churchwardens who is to take up the bread and wine. Put a note of the approximate number of communicants in the ciborium.

 

  1. On the first Sunday of the month encourage young families to sit in the front pews and keep these pews for them.

 

  1. Welcome new people and show them to a seat.

 

  1. Take the collection during the Offertory Hymn.

 

  1. After the service put away the books pick up the hassocks and tidy the font area.

 

  1. After every service check that the Altar area has been cleared away to the Vestry and that both the dust covers are replaced.

 

  1. If you are unable to be present, please arrange a substitute if possible, or advise one of the Churchwardens as soon as possible beforehand.
